Not only do they have the room, they also have the gift of making visitors feel welcome and relaxed. My mother-in-law has lot of talent in the area of cooking, homemaking and interior decorating.
Let's discuss how she accomplished creating a guestroom which is comfortable and restful:
- peaceful colors
- storage space
- mirrors
- comfortable decor
- soft lighting
- furnishings
Peaceful Colors
In order to create a space of relaxation, the use of warm earthy colors is essential.
The walls have been painted a peaceful soft green color and the furniture is neutral off-white with a warm hue. The hand-stitched bedspread also expresses sweet relaxation thought soft texture and color. A comfortable soft bed to lay down on and close your eyes.
Storage Space
Guest will undoubtedly need a place to store their luggage. While it is important to make the room inviting by adding decor, over-doing it in this area will take away from the peacefulness. She makes to keep surface areas clear so guests have a place to store their personal items. Providing a chair to sit on is also a great idea. Make sure there is space for a suitcase (raised is terrific) and hangers for clothing.
Mirrors
One of the key components of decorating an inviting guest bedroom is decorating the walls with peaceful images in the form of artwork and other decoration elements. Adding mirrors as wall decor gives the room a sense of larger size and added light. Remember how to hang a mirror properly. Providing a full-length mirror is a helpful item for the guest to get ready in the morning, but a large mirror that shows their reflection while trying to get to sleep in a 'strange' setting can be very distracting. This room provides a full-length reflection on the closet door and a faux-window mirror. My mom-in-law was able to keep her mirror placement subtle. In this case right above the bed to act as an unexpected headboard.
Comfortable Decor
In order to make the guest feel safe, all the decorations are simple, soft, and comfortable. She found some fun things with soft texture: a woven hat, a soft quilt, three identical wreaths hung across the length of the wall (rather than the length of the bed).
Soft Lighting
A light on the night-stand is essential. Because guest are not familiar with their surroundings, being able to find the light-switch easily at night makes them feel comfortable. (Check out how cute the crystals are on her lamp by the bed)
Nice soft lighting is peaceful. (Let's avoid fluorescent bulbs for instance). But don't make the room too dark. Remember, when a room's lighting is too dim, it makes it hard to find things in the evening, especially when you are not familiar with your surroundings. .
Furnishings
Let's not forget the most important aspect of a guestroom: a nice bed. Mom-in-law provides a comfortable bed with a pillow-top for a great night's rest. If you cannot afford to buy a nice mattress, adding a memory foam pad on top of your existing bed is a fabulous solution. Providing a dresser with empty drawers, the top cleared off for items and the like is very helpful and makes guest feel at home. Don't you love this vintage chest my mom-in-law re-finished? Such a great color and fabulous shape.
